SuMMER & autumn

All year round, the nature surrounding us offer up spectacular adventures and experiences.

We offer activities and accommodation as tailor made packages, or point you in the right direction if you want to explore on your own.

We ask all our guest to give us notice well in advance if they wish to join us on a ready made adventure.

Get in touch with us, and we will plan your adventure together.

Here are some of the activities at Steinbergdalshytta.

Reindeer hike

Steinbergdalshytta is located in Nordfjella, which until a few years ago was an area inhabited by reindeer.  In 2017 they discovered Chronic Wasting Desease (CWD) in some of the animals shot during the annual hunt.  CWD is a prion illness, and the authorities made the dramatic decicion to kill every reindeer in Nordfjella.  The plan is in a couple of years from now to re-introduce healthy animals from the Hardangervidda national park to Nordfjella, so it will hopefully again be an area where reindeer will thrive.  On this hike, you’ll see remains in the terrain from reindeer hunting, hear stories and myths of reindeer from old, and learn about the current situation when reindeer is actually red listed as an endangered species, and what can be done to save it.

Price per person is 450 NOK per person, but combined with an overnight stay you pay only 300 NOK.

Runs on Fridays. Pre-booking is required.

Cheese tasting

Steinbergdalshytta is by definition in West Norway, but just kilometers away from the eastern part.  On both sides from us, they produce world class cheese.  During this tasting you’ll get to try a selection of a wide range of cheeses from traditional brown goat cheese from Undredal in Aurland, to award winning hard cheeses from Hol.  We match the cheeses with our own crisp bread and marmelade, local apple juice and other seasonal tastes.  In addition you will get a good mix of facts and anecdotes about the people and the traditions and the production itself.

Price per person is initially 500 NOK per person, but combined with an overnight stay you pay 360 NOK.

Runs on Thursdays. Pre-booking is required.

FIShing

Fancy going fishing?  Then you can join us to one of the nearby lakes to set or to pull the fishing nets.  There is plenty of trout in the lakes.  The land is state owned and the local mountain board does an excellent job in caring for the fish.  With a licence (fiskekort) you can fish both with a fishing rod and in some lakes with nets.  At Steinbergdalshytta we fish with the goal of providing our kitchen with fresh mountain trout, and you can join us! Depending on which lake we go fishing, we use a rowing boat with motor, sometimes without, so it’s also good exercise.

Price per person is 440 NOK per person, but combined with an overnight stay you pay only 300 NOK.

This activity can only be done if the weather isn’t too rough.

Cooking class

The hostess at Steinbergdalshytta is passionate about food - and at breakfast you will find our very own “Steinberg baked” sourdough bread.

We often arrange cooking classes, teaching how to succeed with sour dough, finding forgotten Norwegian herbs and eatable plants, and last but not least - we teach how to make really tasty food from scratch.

Want to join a cooking class in the mountains? Let us know if you are interested or want to know what our next class will be.

Star gazing

Ever stopped to think about how we have painted the Earth with light? Have you looked up at the night sky without any light source close to you?

Up in the mountains, far away from any light pollution, the night sky is actually pretty fantastic. On clear days we see the Milky way and on some occasions, even the northern light.

Sleeping under the stars in Aurlandsdalen

There is just something about sleeping outdoors under the stars or in a tent. Sitting by the camp fire, preparing food by the fire and sharing stories is something deeply engraved in human beings - we just forgot all about it in our daily stresses.

We have the equipment and know-how to make sure you experience is one to remember,
